The circular economy covers a range of areas in which local authorities can act, focusing on waste prevention and management, which fall within their remit.
The 2020 AGEC law formalized national objectives. The measures are divided into five axes:
- ending single-use plastic
- better informing consumers
- fighting waste and promoting solidarity-based reuse
- acting against planned obsolescence
- producing better
Local authorities play an essential role in implementing this public policy, due to their competencies, their capacity for local animation, and their action closest to citizens. Projects can thus be considered on the following themes:
- Sobriety: adopting a new economic model by supporting actions aimed at combating overconsumption, overproduction, and waste.
- Prevention: implementing operations aimed at reducing household and similar waste at the source and which notably encourage citizen participation.
- Optimization of the public service for waste prevention and management (SPPGD): optimizing and modernizing the service with the aim of reducing the quantity of waste and improving its recovery.
- Material recovery: making household and similar waste useful resources for the territory.
