In order to address the collapse of biodiversity, it is imperative to protect existing natural areas and to facilitate the movement of species between them. Local authorities are responsible for protecting and restoring ecological continuities in their territory, but they severely lack human resources and skills.
Given this observation, since 2017, FNE IDF has been carrying out the Cartovégétation project, a tool to help implement the Green Infrastructure and protect ecological continuities.
Based on our high-resolution land cover maps (COS IDF) (to the nearest meter), Cartovégétation models the habitats and movement paths of animal species in a given territory. These models are then compared with the field knowledge of the various local stakeholders (local authority services, local associations, residents). Finally, Cartovégétation's support leads to the production of a deliverable including precise recommendations, the aim of which is to promote ecological continuities in the studied territory. Thus, the project aims to reorient land use planning in favor of the Green Infrastructure and to strengthen the resilience of territories to climate change.
