Support for artistic commissions in the field of contemporary arts

Public commissioning in the field of contemporary arts offers a dual opportunity: to provide artists with the means to carry out ambitious projects requiring support from public authorities; to contribute to the improvement of the aesthetic quality of public spaces and to the presence of art as close as possible to the population.

The regulation known as the "1% artistic" makes it mandatory, when constructing or extending certain public buildings, to allocate 1% of the investment amount to the creation of one or more contemporary art works specially designed for these places (General Code of Local Authorities Article L1616-1); outside of this procedure, local authorities can take any initiative they deem useful and define their own procedures.

As part of its policy dedicated to cultural development, the Department intends to support municipalities and groups of municipalities in their efforts in favor of artistic commissions and supports the integration of contemporary art works into new urban or environmental programs.

The desired artistic intervention should not be limited to the installation of an isolated work; it must be considered in its environmental context (geographic, architectural, social, etc.) and in a strong relationship with the public.…
