Understanding road restraint systems for communities (training)

The implementation of restraint systems is an essential element of road infrastructure safety, whether on new or existing infrastructure. Today, a quarter of road deaths occur after a collision with an obstacle.

Several guides, instructions or recommendations specify the situations and conditions in which road restraint systems must be installed (current section, central median, etc.).

An order of March 2, 2009, as amended (RNER), specifies the performance requirements for these devices and the rules for their commissioning. Since 2013, the use of CE certified products has become mandatory. The competent services of local authorities need to be able to define a policy in this area, based, in a number of cases, on the advisability of implementing a restraint system.

These choices fall within the asset management policy and the personnel to be trained need assessment criteria or thresholds, in addition to knowledge of the texts.
