Limiting discharges into the sea (port diagnostics and action plans)

Your need

Port managers will be encouraged to carry out environmental diagnostics and implement actions to reduce port pollution, through the implementation of various public policies:

• The Marine Strategy Framework Directive's Programme of Measures, which includes several actions to improve the environmental status of ports: reduction of discharges related to hull cleaning operations, improvement of port waste collection and management systems
• The SDAGEs, which provide for the limitation or elimination of discharges into the sea and also include measures dedicated to limiting hull cleaning discharges.

The Water Police Services of coastal departments can, for their part, impose, under the Water Law, the carrying out of this type of diagnostics on port managers, particularly during the examination of dredging authorization requests.

Finally, the Water Agencies can finance preventive and curative actions contributing to the achievement of the SDAGE objectives.
