Regional intervention framework for the maritime environment

The region's Mediterranean coastline is a formidable asset for the territory's attractiveness and development. With 220 kilometers of coastline, 1.3 million permanent inhabitants, 20 seaside resorts, 70 marinas, 3 commercial ports, 40,000 hectares of lagoons and associated wetlands, 4,700 km² of marine protected areas including a 4,000 km² marine natural park, the Mediterranean facade offers a horizon for the blue economy.

Maritime and terrestrial natural spaces contribute to the attractiveness of Occitanie. As a result, the Region encourages sustainable management of this coastal area and supports local stakeholders in their projects for the preservation of the natural environment, the restoration of ecosystems, and the management of lagoon, marine, and port environments, which support great biodiversity and the development of traditional economic activities (fishing, aquaculture) and recreational activities (boating, water sports).

This intervention framework for the maritime and port environment of Occitanie aims to maintain this attractiveness by contributing to limiting competition between uses (economic, recreational, fishing...) and to preserving or restoring exceptional natural habitats in the Mediterranean.
