Recycling brownfields

Ecological ambition of the funded project

Mobilizing brownfield sites in urban centers and city outskirts is a way to combat the consumption and artificialization of land and natural spaces. The Green Fund helps with the recycling of an urban, commercial, (aero-)port, railway or road, industrial, military or mining brownfield, and more generally, an already artificialized but underutilized land space, for development projects or relocation of activities.

This measure aims to limit urban sprawl, which represents a significant ecological cost due, on the one hand, to its negative effects on natural and agricultural soils (reduced CO2 capture, reduction of biodiversity, pollution) and, on the other hand, to the distance of populations from city centers (pollution due to commutes, travel time, etc.).

Brownfield recycling is beneficial for revitalizing urban spaces and is an important lever for transforming towns and villages.
