"Cities or Countries of Art and History" is a label awarded by the Ministry of Culture to communities that are committed to an active policy of quality heritage, architecture and living environment throughout their territory. The labeling gives the right to the attribution of a subsidy when project leaders apply for it for the development of a resource and information sharing center relating to the evolution of the territory, its history and its cultural, heritage and architectural riches.

Created in 1985, the "City or Country of Art and History" label is awarded to territories that commit to using their cultural, heritage and architectural resources to develop their territory.

The term heritage must be understood in its broadest sense, since it concerns both all built heritage and natural, industrial, maritime, technical heritage as well as the memory of the inhabitants.
