Understanding the basics of signalized intersections (training)

Signalized intersections are by nature a place where different modes of transport intersect in an often very constrained environment. They ensure the sharing of time between the different branches of the intersection. The design of signalized intersections is done in two dimensions: space but also time, unlike that of other intersections which is limited to the spatial dimension. This leads to very specific design rules that are often counter-intuitive for neophytes. Once put into service, signalized intersections must be monitored, their operation regularly updated, and appropriate maintenance performed.
This training is a module for acculturation to the different aspects of the life cycle of a signalized intersection.
Educational objectives

At the end of this module, trainees will be able to:

• Decipher the vocabulary specific to signalized intersections
• Understand the different stages of the life cycle of signalized intersections: from design to operational monitoring
• Know the different regulations and standards applicable to signalized intersections
