Le programme Stimulating Hematology Investigation: New Endeavors (SHINE) est destiné à promouvoir une recherche innovante et de haute qualité en hématologie non maligne, pertinente pour les missions du National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), du National Institute of Aging (NIA) et du National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Les demandes de subventions pour des projets de recherche à l'initiative des chercheurs (R01) dans des domaines spécifiques de la recherche fondamentale et de la recherche translationnelle précoce en hématologie sont invitées à participer à ce programme qui soutient la croissance dans le domaine de la recherche en hématologie non maligne. L'objectif du programme de bourses d'amélioration de la recherche (REAP) pour les écoles de professionnels de la santé et les écoles supérieures est de stimuler la recherche fondamentale et clinique dans les établissements d'enseignement qui délivrent des diplômes de baccalauréat ou des diplômes supérieurs à un nombre important de chercheurs de la nation, mais qui n'ont pas été des bénéficiaires majeurs du soutien du NIH. Les bourses REAP créent des opportunités pour les scientifiques et les institutions qui, autrement, ne participeraient probablement pas de manière extensive aux programmes de recherche du NIH, de contribuer à l'effort national de recherche biomédicale et comportementale. Les bourses REAP sont destinées à soutenir des projets de recherche à petite échelle proposés par des membres du corps professoral d'institutions nationales éligibles, à exposer les étudiants de premier cycle et/ou de deuxième cycle des écoles de professionnels de la santé ou des écoles supérieures à des projets de recherche méritoires, et à renforcer l'environnement de recherche de l'institution candidate. Les institutions éligibles doivent délivrer des diplômes de baccalauréat ou des diplômes supérieurs pertinents pour le NIH dans les professions de la santé et avoir reçu moins de 6 millions de dollars par an de soutien du NIH (coûts totaux) au cours de 4 des 7 dernières années fiscales. Dans cette NOFO, un collège est une entité autonome et non une composante d'un système universitaire.

L'objectif de ce Prix d'amélioration de la recherche universitaire (AREA) pour les institutions axées sur les études de premier cycle est de soutenir des subventions de recherche à petite échelle dans les institutions qui ne reçoivent pas de financement substantiel du NIH, en mettant l'accent sur l'offre d'expériences de recherche biomédicale principalement aux étudiants de premier cycle, et sur l'amélioration de l'environnement de recherche dans les institutions candidates. Les institutions éligibles doivent décerner des diplômes de baccalauréat en sciences et ne pas avoir reçu plus de $6 million de dollars par an de soutien du NIH (en coûts directs et indirects F et A) au cours de 4 des 7 derniers exercices fiscaux. Pour les institutions composées de plusieurs écoles et collèges, la limite de financement de $6 million est basée sur le montant du financement du NIH reçu par toutes les écoles et collèges non professionnels de la santé au sein de l'institution dans son ensemble.
