France has a rich linguistic heritage: French, regional languages, non-territorial languages, French sign language... The Ministry of Culture financially supports projects aimed at developing and promoting this heritage.

What are the languages of France? Alongside French, the national language, the languages of France shape our cultural identity and constitute a living and creative intangible wealth. The following are considered languages of France:

• regional languages , enshrined in the Constitution since 2008: " Regional languages belong to the heritage of France " ( article 75-1 Opens a new window ). These are languages historically spoken in a part of the territory of the Republic, for longer than French: Alsatian, Basque, Breton, Catalan, Corsican, Creoles, West Flemish, Franconian, Franco-Provençal, Futunian, indigenous languages of New Caledonia, indigenous languages of French Guiana, indigenous languages of French Polynesia, Oïl languages (Burgundian-Morvan, Champenois, Franco-Comtois, Gallo, Lorrain, Norman, Picard, Poitevin-Saint…
