Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences Core Programs (MCB)

United States · US

Who can apply Others (see text field entitled "Additional Information on Eligibility" for clarification)

MCB supports research that promises to uncover the fundamental properties of living systems across atomic, molecular, subcellular, and cellular scales. The program gives high priority to projects that advance mechanistic understanding of the structure, function, and evolution of molecular, subcellular, and cellular systems, especially research that aims at quantitative and predictive knowledge of complex behavior and emergent properties. MCB encourages research exploring new concepts in molecular and cellular biology, while incorporating insights and approaches from other scientific disciplines, such as chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physics, to illuminate principles that govern life at the molecular and cellular level. MCB also encourages research that exploits experimental and theoretical approaches and utilizes a diverse spectrum of model and non-model animals, plants, and microbes across the tree of life. Proposals that pursue potentially transformative ideas are welcome, even if these entail higher risk. This solicitation calls for proposals in research areas supported by the four MCB core clusters, including: (i) structure, dynamics, and function of biomolecules and supramolecular assemblies, especially under physiological conditions ( Molecular Biophysics ); (ii) organization, processing, expression, regulation, and evolution of genetic and epigenetic information ( Genetic Mechanisms ); (iii) cellular structure, properties, and function across broad spatiotemporal scales ( Cellular Dynamics and Function ); and (iv) systems and/or synthetic biology to study complex interactions through modeling or manipulation or design of living systems at the molecular-to-cellular scale ( Systems and Synthetic Biology ). All MCB clusters prioritize projects that integrate across scales, investigate molecular and cellular evolution, synergize experimental research with computational or mathematical modeling, and/or develop innovative, broadly applicable methods and technologies. Projects that bridge the intellectual edges between MCB clusters are welcome. Projects that integrate molecular and cellular biosciences with other subdisciplines of biology are also welcome through the new Integrative Research in Biology (IntBIO) track. Regarding health-related challenges, NSF supports basic research in all areas of the biological sciences and recognizes that this foundational research is likely to impact many different areas, including human health. MCB celebrates all the biological science discoveries funded through MCB awards that have had major impacts on health, environment, energy, food production, and other applications. Nevertheless, research focused exclusively on understanding human diseases and their treatment is normally outside of the scope of funding and will be returned without review unless that research significantly advances other fields such as engineering, computer science, or the mathematical and physical sciences.

Experimenting with nature-based solutions to mitigate climate change and its consequences

France · FR

Who can apply Commune · Intercommunalité / Pays · Entreprise publique locale (Sem, Spl, SemOp)

Rising sea levels, drought, rainfall disruption, etc., climate change is already a reality in Normandy and the "Seine Normande" territory. In the medium term, the expected effects of climate change on inhabitants and resources will be problematic: pressure on the quality and quantity of drinking water resources, decrease in air quality, more severe seasonal variations, flooding along the Seine and rivers, decrease in soil quality with effects on agriculture and health, droughts that could reduce agricultural yields, increased presence of invasive species. To limit and stabilize global warming, CO2 emissions should be reduced rapidly, with a net-zero emission target by 2050, and emissions of other greenhouse gases should also be significantly reduced. It will also be necessary to adapt and change our lifestyles. To meet these challenges, local actors are betting on nature: nature to reconnect with our essential needs, nature-based solutions to develop viable and sustainable economic alternatives that are less costly in the long term than technological investments or the construction and maintenance of infrastructure, nature at the heart of new forms of urban planning. Living, moving and working in the area

France · FR

Who can apply Commune · Intercommunalité / Pays · Entreprise publique locale (Sem, Spl, SemOp)

In the area, journeys made by residents, particularly home-to-work journeys, are mainly made by car. At a time of dwindling fossil fuels and the necessary reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, it is necessary to find alternative ways of getting around, but also innovative solutions to bring work and residents' places of life closer together. On this last point, it is also necessary to review living arrangements because certain categories of the population do not find housing adapted to their needs (lack of attractive small typologies, housing associated with services, shared and inclusive housing). Strategic objective: Living, moving and working in the area Operational objectives: A sober and inclusive habitat mode An alternative transport offer that irrigates the territory and meets the needs of residents Work integrated into the rural fabric

Strengthening the heart of villages through a service offering adapted to different life paths

France · FR

Who can apply Commune · Intercommunalité / Pays · Entreprise publique locale (Sem, Spl, SemOp)

The territory has a good network of service centers, but some communes remain more than 15 minutes away from everyday facilities (some more isolated communes on the left bank of the Seine or in the south of the territory in the Lieuvin). In addition, health service needs are less well met: notably a lack of health professionals (general practitioners, specialists, etc.). This situation is detrimental to the inhabitants of the territory and to its attractiveness. The increase in the number of single-person households, single-parent families, and the accelerating aging of the population reinforces the need to support projects that foster social ties and solidarity, located in the heart of towns and villages. Strategic objective: Energize villages with activities that create social ties Operational objectives: New economic models that create meaning Strengthening inclusion, solidarity, and intergenerational links Access to services for all

Develop entrepreneurship and experiment with new economic models

France · FR

Who can apply Commune · Intercommunalité / Pays · Entreprise publique locale (Sem, Spl, SemOp)

The territory shows good business creation dynamics, with a high survival rate (77% 3-year survival rate in 2018) and the unemployment rate is generally lower than the Norman average. However, these figures mask inequalities. Indeed, young people face higher unemployment than other age groups (23% unemployment rate for 15-24 year olds) and women represent only 28% of business creations. Thus, in order to strengthen the good dynamics of business creation, local actors wish to support assistance for business creation, transfer and takeover by developing the reception of young workers and female entrepreneurship. In the post-COVID societal situation, it seemed relevant to focus on supporting meaningful economic activities, more inclusive, creating social ties, a vector of integration, and why not experimenting with the feasibility of new models. Enhancing local resources through short supply chains with sobriety

In the “Seine Normande” territory, despite diversified agricultural productions (cereals, meat, milk, fruits, fibers, etc.) and quality forest resources (especially hardwoods), processing and valorization are often relocated outside the region or even internationally, which leads to a significant loss of added value and jobs. Long considered only as a source of nuisance, end-of-life products are now considered as a potential source of resources, particularly through repair and reuse. The valorization of its primary or recycled local resources is a priority to ensure the dynamism of the territory and to meet the challenges of ecological transition. Who can apply Commune · Intercommunalité / Pays · Entreprise publique locale (Sem, Spl, SemOp)

The quality natural environments (Ramsar Site Marais Vernier-Risle maritime, Heurteauville peat bog, Seine estuary reserve...), forests, landscapes of the Seine loops and plateaus (meanders, hillsides, flax fields, clos-masures...), heritage towns (Pont-Audemer, Rives-en-Seine, Cormeilles, La Bouille), built heritage (abbeys, castles and manors...), past and present know-how (arboriculture, thatched cottages, artisans, tannery, maritime and industrial past...) are all resources for cultural life and assets for tourism. The territory benefits from a rich associative life from which various cultural events emanate. Recent societal changes offer an opportunity for the development of family and local tourism. The LEADER Seine Normande program wishes to encourage the local anchoring of cultural and tourist proposals, so that they are a means of better knowledge of the territory and that they benefit both excursionists and inhabitants.
